Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford University in 1995. They built a search engine that used links to determine the importance of individual pages on the World Wide Web, calling it BackRub, which was shortly after renamed Google.

Google launched its Google News service in 2002, an automated service which summarizes news articles from various websites.
In 2003, after outgrowing two other locations, the company leased an office complex from Silicon Graphics, at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway in Mountain View, California.
On August 19, 2004, Google became a public company via an initial public offering.
